The Soul Train: From Memphis to Chicago to Berlin – 15 Jahre Jazzkeller Köpenick
From Memphis to Chicago to Berlin
Rhythm 'n' Blues was the black popular music of the post-war era. The end of the 50s saw the combination of electric rhythm 'n' blues and ecstatic gospel artists like Ray Charles or Sam Cook.
In Berlin at this time, the US troops left their mark on the city with their Coca-Cola, jazz and AFN radio. Among these were many US artists who had made Germany their second home. Janice Harrington, who came over from Cleveland in 1980, had traveled world-wide with a number of show bands. Eb Davis, from the Stax metropole Memphis, had formed his first band in New York. Also from New York, Guitar Crusher, who played in the 60s The Drifters and other R&B greats. Out of Chicago we have Angela Brown, who snuck into clubs at the age of 9, and came to be named "Hottest Girl in Town", and not least there's Alabama's Tommie Harris, who began his career singing gospel, later going on to play drums with the likes of Sam and Dave and many others.
Experience a journey through time to the unforgettable classics of soul, presented by Luigi Lauer from Deutschlandfunk.
Have fun
